June 16

The day that changed South African history

One this day, the black community stood up and fought for their rights. They fought against being marginalized, constantly having their rights trampled upon by a system that viewed them as unworthy of living dignified lives. As the youth of today do we understand the depth of the sacrifice or are we merely glad that we get a day off work or school?

Happy June 16 everyone, let us not only get drunk but let us honor the lives of those we fought for us by taking our education seriously and doing more to empower ourselves and those around us.

  1. The events that took place that day lead to change that now enables black students to have access to education of a better standard. This then affords us the opportunity to pursue our careers and opens doors to us that were out of reach for the black generations preceding us. Unfortunately, I do not think that we [the black youth] do realise the that this is a gift that places the future of our country and of the upcoming generations on our laps. We are wasting this gift. I don't think all those brave souls that fought for this change are proud of us at all.

  3. True , instead the 16th is a mere uniform wearing and drinking day for the youth.
